Abstract

1470828 Pneumatic tyre bead constructions DUNLOP Ltd 18 April 1974 [20 April 1973] 16959/74 Heading B7C A tyre having a radial ply carcass 5 of steel cords, bead wires 7 and chafer strips 9 is provided with at least one reinforcing ply 11 of steel cords in each bead, the radially outer edge of the ply or plies 11 in each bead being folded about the radially outer edge of the carcass ply turned-up portion 8. The or each reinforcing ply is less rigid than the chafer strip in each bead. Preferably the cords in each chafer strip are disposed at an angle of 15-30 degrees to the aircumferential axis of the associated bead wire, and the cords in the or each reinforcing ply in each bead are disposed at an angle of 15-45 degrees to that axis. In a bead having only one ply 11 the cords of the reinforcing ply and the chafer strip may make the cord angle with the same or opposite directions of the circumferential axis. With a plurality of plies 11 in each bead, the cords of the plies are disposed at different angles. A secondary reinforcing ply of cords of synthetic material (e.g. nylon and polyester) may be situated in each bead axially outwardly of the reinforcing ply or plies 11.
