Abstract
1470523 Controlling light DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 2 Aug 1974 [7 Aug 1973] 37451/73 Heading G2F In a modification of the devices generally described in Specification 1469638 the dispersive birefringent layer is composite and such as to provide a colour pattern on projection of light along the optical path, the colours of the pattern changing as the voltage applied to the liquid crystal cell is altered. The composite layer may comprise a number of coplanar pieces of material, each of the same thickness, with various shapes and optical axis directions. Alternatively, or in addition, the pieces may be stacked and may have different or variable thicknesses. The pattern may be abstract, or comprise alphanumeric symbols, or be arranged to simulate animation. The electrodes of the liquid crystal cell may also be etched, and the polarizers may have areas of different polarization direction and may be shaped. A coloured filter may be provided for modifying or obcuring parts of the pattern. The voltage applied to the cell may be produced in response to a second e.g. from a vocal or instrumental group, or a recording, and the varying pattern projected or otherwise reviewed. The device may alternatively be incorporated at the base of a fibre optic lamp.
