Abstract

1470388 Reciprocating pumps RCA CORPORATION 14 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 24140/73 Heading F1A [Also in Divisions B6 F2 and G3] A device, e.g. for controlling fluid-flow, for use as an ink ejector of an ink printer or for use as a fuel injector of an I.C. engine, comprises a tube 30 having at least one bow-shaped wall portion 34a, 34b and a transverse wall 32. On application of a magnetic or electric signal the wall portion 34a, 34b alters its arcuate length and thereby alters the cross-sectional area 35a, 35b. The signal in the present embodiment is an electrical signal applied to a coil 38 wound so as to induce a magnetic flux 33. The coil may be formed by a printed circuit attached to the wall 32. The wall portions 34a, 34b contract when subjected to the flux whereas the wall 32 expands, thereby producing a reduction in the cross-sectional area 35a, 35b. Thus if the device is without a nozzle 36 and is supplied with a D.C. signal it would function to control fluid-flow through the tube 30. However when the device is formed as an ink ejector an A.C. signal is applied to cause ink to be ejected through nozzle opening 39. The wall portions 34a, 34b may be of nickel, nickel-iron alloy, cobalt or cobal-iron alloy, and the wall 32 may be of iron or iron-nickel alloy. The wall 32 may be arcuate. The elliptical tube 30 may be provided with a further transverse wall lying on its minor axis. The tube may instead be of circular, parabolic or hyperbolic cross-section. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the magnetic flux is produced by an electromagnet (50a, 50b). Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates the application of the device to an ink printer.
