Abstract

1470381 Infra-red gas analyzer MULLARD Ltd 18 June 1974 [30 March 1973] 15350/73 Heading G1A An infrared gas analyzer is arranged to measure the concentrations of a plurality of components in vehicle exhaust. Infrared radiation having passed through the gas mixture is passed through a rotating filter wheel which has sections passing peak absorption wavelengths characteristic of the various components. The detected radiation signals are stored, compared with a reference level and corrected for any overlapping regions of the absorption characteristics. As shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust gas passes through a cell formed by two concave mirrors, source 1 and detector 10 being at their foci. The filter wheel 9, is formed of a circularly variable continuous interference film but is masked off by mask 15 to allow transmission only through apertures 19 at positions corresponding, to the absorption wavelengths characteristic of the various components, Fig. 2. A projection 16 associated with a photo-electric system provides synchronizing signals for multi-plex de-coder which receives signals from the detector 10 and distributes them to respective integration circuits 35-40, which store the detector outputs corresponding to the different gas components. Integration circuit 41 is reserved for detector signals relating to cut-out 20 of the filter wheel, which characterises none of the gases but is used as a reference. Its output. is fed back to input amplifier 31 where in an automatic gain control circuit it is compared with a reference. The reference provided by 41 is used in amplifiers 42 to standardize the signals on all channels, which signals are then linearized in logarithmic units 47-51 for all but that channel including integrator 38, which does not produce a high enough output to require such correction. Overlapping absorption bands are dealt with by combining the outputs of channels e.g. the H 2 O signal from 51 with the CO 2 signal from 47, in amplifier 60, to obtain accurate concentration representative signals for all components.
