Abstract
1470292 Inorganic fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 March 1974 [21 Dec 1972] 7690/73 Divided out of 1425934 Heading C1A Fibres are prepared by (a) extruding a fibrizing composition into at least one gas stream having a component of high velocity in the direction of travel of the extruded composition, the latter having a viscosity of above 0À1 poise and being a solution of a fibre-forming metal (including B and Si) compound in an evaporable solvent, (b) contacting the resulting fibre, before collection, with a gaseous composition (including an aerosol of colloidal particles) reactable with the fibre to at least partially harden the outer layer of the fibre, and (c) removing residual solvent from the fibre. The fibre may then be heated to convert the metal compound into an oxide. The process of 1,425,934 is disclaimed. The solvent is preferably an alcohol. The gaseous composition preferably comprises air and a basic gas, e.g. ammonia or organic amines. The metal compound may be a chloride, sulphate, acetate, formate, hydroxide, phosphate or nitrate of Al, Fe, Zr, Ti, Be, Cr, Mg, Th, U, Y, Ni, V, Mn, Mo, W or Co or their mixtures; or ethyl silicate; or a complex aluminium phosphate as in 1,322,722. An organic polymer may be present, as well as other additives, many of which are listed, and including catalytic materials. Examples prepare alumina fibres from an aqueous solution of basic aluminium oxychloride and polyethylene oxide; and zirconia fibres containing yttria from a solution of zirconium acetate, zirconium chloride, yttrium chloride and polyethylene oxide.
