Claims (19)
1. A eatalyst compositio which comprises a carrier and active components, the active components being elemental platinum together with nickel and/or cobalt, the said composition having an alkali metal and sulphur conten each less than 0*05 percent by weight* the of said catalyst been prepared by deposition/the platinum onto the carrier after the deposition of the nickel and/or cobalt thereon.
2. A catalyst composition as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the platinum content is in the range 0,01 to 1 percent by weight and the nickel content and/or cobal content is in the range of 0,1 to 10 percent by weight.
3. A eatalyst composition as claiaed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherei the carrier is aluminium oxide, silicon dioxide, an aluminium and/or magnesium silicate, magnesium oxide, titanium dioxide and/or zirconium disoxide.
4. A catalyst composition as claimed in Claim 3, wherein u the carrier is a high purity aliminium oxide obtained by hydrolysis of an organic aluminium compound and subsequent calcination.
5. A catalyst composition as claimed in Claim 4 wherein the aluminium *xide is obtained by the hydrolysis of an aluminium alcoholate.
6. A catalyst composition as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 5* wherein the carrier consists of cylindrical strands or pellets or of monolithic elements penetrated by cavities. 40262/2
7. A catalyst composition as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the average diameters of the strands and pellets lie between 1.0 and 5 mm.
8. A catalyst composition as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the crushing strength of the cylindrical strands or pelletst measured at the cylinder walls is at least 3 kp per mm of cylinder height,
9. A catalyst composition as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the crushing strength of the cylindrical strands measured at the cylinder wall is at least 5 kp per mm of cylinder height,
10.A catalyst composition as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the cavities of the monolithic elements have an average diameter of about 0.5 to 5 mm.
11.A method for the production of a catalyst composition as claimed in any of claims 1 to 10, which method of comprises first deposition/nickel and/or cobalt onto a refractory carrier and subsequently depositing platinum onto the carrier» the starting materials for the carrier and the active components being so chosen that the alkali metal and sulphur content in the inished catalyst each amount to less than 0.05 percent by weight.
12.A method a claimed in Claim 11, wherei the carrier is first impregnated with a nickel and or cobalt salt solution, then impregnated with a platinum salt solution and thereafer is droned and calcined.
13.A method as claimed in Claim 11 or Claim 12, wherein an aluminium alcoholate is hydroljsed with water to form 40262/2 aluininium hydroxide, the aluminium hydroxide obtained is dried, and moulded to form moulded bodies, the moulded bodies ar converted into aluminium oxide by calcining, are impregnated first with aqueous niekel and/or cobalt sal solution, then imprgenated with a platinum salt solution and therea er are calcinlSed at a temperature in the range 350 t© 700°C,
14. 4.A method or removing carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and/or hydrocarbons contained in the exhaust gases from internal combustion engines which method comprises passing a stream of the exhaust gases over a catalyst composition as claimed in any on of claims 1 to 10· as
15. 5.A method/claimed in Claim 14, wherein the exhaust gases are treated in a reducing atmosphere without the addition of air to remove the nitrogen oxide**
16.A method as claimed in Claim 14» wherein the exhaust gases are treated in a& oxidising atmospher with the addition of air to remove carbon monoxide*
17. · method as claimed in Claim 14, wherein the catalys is provided in a two-stage reactor system such that the exhaust gases are treated in the first stage of the reaetor in a reducing atmosphere without the addition of air to remove the nitrogen oxides and subsequently treated in the s#p$nd stage of th reactor in an oxidising atmosphere with the addition of ai to remove carbon monoxide.
