Abstract

1287288 Oxide fibres UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 22 Dec 1969 [27 Dec 1968] 62277/69 Heading C1A Refractory inorganic oxide fibres are prepared by mixing a refractory inorganic oxide sol and a fibre forming organic synthetic polymer which is soluble in the sol, concentrating the resulting reaction mixture while maintaining liquid phase conditions, drawing the concentrated reaction mixture into fibres in an atmosphere having a relative humidity of not more than 80% and calcining the resulting fibres in a molecular oxygen-containing environment at a temperature of at least 300‹ C., thereby burning the organic matter from the fibres. Exemplified sols are Al 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 -Cr 2 O 3 ; others mentioned are ZrO 2 , SiO 2 , MgO, ThO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 . They may be prepared by hydrolysis of a metal salt, e.g. Zr acetate or Al chloride, sulphate, nitrate, or acetate, or by electrolysis, e.g. of AlCl 3 . Exemplified polymers are polyurethane, polyethylene oxide, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polyvinyl alcohol; others are listed.
