1470167 Measuring torque ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 25 April 1974 [23 May 1973] 24538/73 Heading G1A In a device for measuring the torque applied to a shaft 52 connected to a compressor 50 and driven by a motor 51, the relative rotation between two transparent glass discs 12, 32 with opaque radial lines, or an opaque disc with perforations, attached to the shaft is measured with the aid of a number of index grating 15, 35, which are associated with each disc and which are positioned such that the amount of light from sources 53, 54 which passes via optical fibre light guides 19, 39, as shown, to a series of photo-cells 20, 40 is dependent upon the relative positions of the discs 12, 32 and indexing grating 15, 35. The photo-cell outputs corresponding to each disc are summed in a summing amplifier 22, 42, in the case of the shaft being continuously rotated, connected to a phase meter 29 supplying a digital voltmeter 30 which indicates the magnitude of the torque. When the shaft is not rotated the difference between the summed photo-cell output signals can just be fed straight to a digital voltmeter to provide a measurement of torque. The description discloses a suitable signal processing circuit Fig. 2 (not shown).
