Abstract
1470057 Laminates BRITISH STEEL CORP 7 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 28872/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A metal laminate comprises two metal sheets separated by an adhesive which is the crosslinked polymerization product of an adhesive composition comprising an admixture of (A) a prepolymer which is a copolymer of 20-50 p.b.w. styrene and optionally a minor amount of methyl methacrylate, 10-30 p.b.w. n-butyl methacrylate, 10-35 p.b.w. butyl acrylate, 15-30 p.b.w. 2-etherhexylacrylate, 2-12 p.b.w acrylic acid and 2-12 p.b.w. of an acrylic isocyanate-reactive component which is one or more of a hydroxy acrylic ester, a hydroxy methacrylic ester, an acrylamide or a methylolated acrylamide; (B) a prepolymer which is a copolymer of 50-70 p.b.w. vinyl acetate, 25- 45 p.b.w. 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, 2-8 p.b.w. acrylic acid and 2-8 p.b.w. of an acrylic isocyanate-reactive component as in prepolymer (A); prepolymers A and B being present in a weight ratio of 9 : 1 to 1 : 9, together with (C) a urethane prepolymer which is a polymerization product of 35-40 p.b.w. of an isocyanate having at least 2 isocyanate groups, 1-1À5 p.b.w. ethylene glycol, 15-20 p.b.w. of one or more of polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol or a polycaprolactone each of M.Wt. 400, and 40-50 p.b.w. of one or more of polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol or polybutadiene each of M.Wt. 1000; in which 3-12% of the NCO groups are free NCO groups; the urethane prepolymer having its free NCO groups blocked with a heat-removable blocking agent. The adhesive may be applied to the metal sheets by coating a solution of the composition on to a face of one or both sheets, removing the solvent and subsequently pressing the sheets together at an elevated temperature. In the Example 2 steel sheets are bonded to gether using an adhesive comprising prepolymer A: styrene 35%, n-butyl methacrylate 18%, butyl acrylate 17%, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate 24%, acrylic acid 3% and hydroxyethyl acrylate 3%; prepolymer B:- vinyl acetate 55%, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate 35%, hydroxyethyl acrylate 5% and acrylic acid 5%, and a urethane prepolymer of toluene diisocyanate 38%, ethylene glycol 1À34%, polypropylene glycol (M.W. 400) 17À5%, polypropylene glycol (M.W. 1000) 43% blocked with phenol the percentages being by weight. Upon heating the adhesive crosslinks.
