Abstract
1469885 Pumps; hydraulic turbines KOBE INC 29 April 1974 18708/74 Headings F1C and FIT [Also in Division B2] In a single or multi-stage rotary chamber pump comprising a rotary casing 9, Fig. 1, defining a chamber containing stationary scoops 19, 20, the peripheral wall of chamber section 52 is provided with one or more orifices 71, Fig. 2, each large enough to permit foreign material present in the pumped liquid to pass therethrough to a point outside the casing but having a total cross-sectional area sufficiently small to avoid a substantial pressure drop in the chamber section 52. The foreign material may be sediment or relatively heavy liquid. The peripheral wall has a number of V-shaped zones 62 formed between shoulders 63 and communicating through passages 68 with an annular channel 67 in communication with the orifices 71 via further passages 20. The foreign material is discharged through the orifices into an outer housing 13 where it is collected for removal via pipe 77. The orifices 71 discharge tangentially so that some of the potentially-lost energy is returned by the jet effect of the discharging flow. The shape and dimensions of passages 68 are such that the passages collectively function as a strainer to prevent large foreign particles from entering the orifices. The passages 68 are angled as shown to impart a tangential velocity to the flow entering the channel 67 to prevent accumulations therein. The scoop 19 is provided internally with a vane 75.
