Abstract

1469866 Separating hydrocarbon mixtures and separating water from oils A JOHNSON & CO Inc 19 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 32116/74 Heading C5E A continuous process for separating at least one hydrocarbon fraction from a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons comprises introducing the mixture continuously into a flow path, a portion of which has an elongate cross-section in a direction transverse to the flow of the mixture, supplying heat to the mixture as it passes along the portion of the flow path to cause progressive volatilization of part of the mixture with a resultant substantial increase in the velocity of the mixture, discharging the mixture from the flow path and rapidly separating the released vapours of the hydrocarbon fraction from the concentrated liquid hydrocarbon material. A feed 13 of asphalt diluted with diesel fuel is heated at 16 and 21 and then in the plate heaters 25 and 26. The heaters 25 and 26 each comprise a series of closely spaced parallel plates (Fig. 2, not shown) which can be corrugated, the feed to be heated and separated is passed through a space formed between two of the plates and hot oil heating medium 48 is passed through another such space-a number of such plates can be arranged side by side to provide more than one channel for the feed and more than one channel for the heating medium. The release of the diesel fuel as vapour in heater 26 is assisted by stripping steam 47. The heated vapour-liquid mixture is passed through a short line 60 into a separator 62 in which liquid asphalt 66 and diesel fuel vapour 65, which is taken off through a rotating vane tuyere 70, are obtained. The process can also be used to separate a gas oil from a reduced Venezuelan asphalt crude oil, as an alternative to vacuum flashing, or to separate a mixture of used motor oil, lubricating grease and water.
