Abstract
1469268 Electric control of ship propulsion BOEING CO 27 Nov 1974 [10 June 1974] 51485/74 Heading G3N A combined control system for a reverser bucket and a prime mover throttle control on a hydrofoil craft employs potentiometers mechanically linked to a manual control and having non-resistive contact sections to provide control of the bucket position when the prime mover is idling and subsequent control of the throttle valve when the bucket is positioned. As shown the potentiometer 76 is used to control the energization of the throttle control valve 108 of the prime mover 58 driving the pumps 56 which provides the propelling water jet 40 and for this purpose is provided with a contact section 88 at the centre of travel of wiper 72. The potentiometer 78 controls the bucket position and has a centrally disposed resistive section 110 flanked by contact sections 112, 114 so that movement of throttle lever 68 from the central point causes the bucket drive valve 60 to be moved until the reset potentiometer wiper 132 is balanced with the potentiometer wiper 74. A manually controlled switch 138 connects the bucket control mechanism to pre-set potentiometric chain 120, 122, 124 to hold bucket 46 stationary so that prime mover starting and running can be controlled by the throttle. In operation the prime mover idles at 6000 rpm during movement of the buckets to select forward or reverse motion and then speeds up as wiper 72 contacts section 96, 94 to 13,250 rpm ahead or 7,600 rpm astern respectively to increase the speed of the jet and thus the speed of the hydrofoil.
