Abstract
1469230 Luminescent materials DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 4 June 1974 [6 March 1973] 10786/73 Heading C4S [Also in Division C1] A method of preparing a compound of formula E 2 GL 3 where E is one of Ca, Sr, Ba, G is one of Zn, Cd, Hg and L is one of S, Se, Te comprises treating in an inert atmosphere a compound EL with a compound GL by heating to produce at least some compound of the above formula. Preferably, EL and GL are in a 2 : 1 molar ratio. When the compounds are phosphors, activators and coactivators may be included, and the phosphors used in c.r.t.s and electroluminescent devices. Reference is made to devices which exhibit fluorescence (e.g. by U.V. or X-ray excitation and those which cathodoluminesce. Activators may be Mn or one or more (e.g. two or more) rare earths, e.g. Er. The phosphor is preferably particulate and Cu coated. Preparations of starting materials and final products are detailed and reference made to Specification 1,449,602. ZnS for example produced by precipitation from Zn acetate by thioacetamide addition yields only a few p.p.m. of Cd, Bi, and In. α or # form ZnS may be used. Metallic sulphides electroluminesce if doped with Mn and Cl for instance and Cu coated as in Specification 1,314,522. 0À5% Mn may be added to Ba 2 ZnS 3 from an ethanol solution which is evaporated, the mixture being fired at 800-900‹ C. In the Figure, phosphor particles are dispersed in a translucent matrix, e.g. polymethylacrylate, to form layer 10 between tin oxide strip 14 and evaporated Al film 18. The device is treated by a forming process as in Specification 1,300,548.
