Abstract
1469143 Converters LA METALLO-CHIMIQUE SA 20 June 1974 [21 June 1973] 27431/74 Heading F4B A rotary furnace, e.g. for recovery of copper from copper bearing materials, comprises a vessel 3 mounted in a ring 23 which is tiltable about a horizontal axis to tilt the vessel. The vessel is rotatably driven within the ring about the ring axis. Mounting of the vessel within the ring is by means of a first annular bearing means secured to the ring and a second annular bearing means secured to and surrounding the vessel. The first annular bearing means comprises an annular ring member 67, Fig. 5, provided with bearing surfaces 75, 77 and 73. The second annular bearing means comprises an assembly of annular members 81, 83 and 79. This assembly has a ring gear 103 and provides bearing surfaces which face the bearing surfaces 75, 77 and 73. Between the facing bearing surfaces are axial thrust bearings 97 and 99 and radial thrust bearings 101. The vessel is supported from the annular member 79 by radially spaced pins 117 which fit socket members 113 in the vessel wall and allow for expansion. The ring 23 is supported by trunnions 27, Fig. 1, and 25. Trunnion 27 is journalled in a bearing 29 on a pedestal 31. Trunnion 25 is keyed to the hub of a relatively large wheel gear 37 which can be rotated by means of a drive gear 43 to tilt the vessel 3. Rotary drive of the vessel 3 is from a power drive unit 57 secured to the wheel gear 37. Drive is through gear 59, pinion (61), Fig. 4 (not shown), and the ring gear 103, Fig. 5. Lubricant for the thrust bearings 97, 99 and 101 is supplied through a fitting (121), Fig. 4 (not shown), and tube (125). Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates a modified drive to rotate the vessel wherein the drive to the ring gear 103 is from a drive shaft (127) accommodated in the trunnion 25 which is made tubular for the purpose. Fig. 7 (not shown) illustrates a modification of the pin arrangement for mounting the vessel wherein a tubular pin (197) is lubricated. The vessel has a refractory lining 15, Fig. 1, a steel shell 13 and cooling shells 165, 173 and 17. A blower 163 blows air to an annular air duct 161 and thence through the spaces between the shell 3 and surrounding cooling shells.
