Abstract

1468840 2 - Pyrazinyl -, 3 - pyridyl or 5- pyrimidinyl-methanols ELI LILLY & CO 21 May 1974 22577/74 Heading C2C Novel methanol derivatives of general formula where R is an optionally substituted 2-pyrazinyl, 3-pyridyl or 5-pyrimidinyl group; R<SP>1</SP> is an optionally substituted phenyl, pyridyl, C 1-12 alkyl or monocyclic C 3-8 cycloalkyl group and R<SP>2</SP> is an optionally substituted (fluoroalkoxy)phenyl; 3,4-(difluoromethylenedioxy) - phenyl or 2,2,4,4 - tetrafluoro - 1,3 - benzodioxanyl group or an addition salt thereof with a non-phytotoxic acid, are prepared by reacting a ketone of formula R<SP>1</SP>-CO-R<SP>2</SP> with 5-bromopyrimidine, 2-iodopyrazine or 3-bromopyridine. Amongst numerous examples there are prepared α - isopropyl - α - [(p - trifluoromethoxy)phenyl]- 2 - pyrazinemethanol, α - cyclohexyl - α - [p- (1,1,2,2 - tetrafluoroethoxy)phenyl] - 3 - pyridinemethanol and α - [3,4 - difluoromethylenedioxy)phenyl] - α - isopropyl - 5 - pyridinemethanol. Isopropyl - p - (CF 3 and C 2 F 5 ) - oxyphenyl ketones are obtained from the p-bromo-fluoroalkoxybenzene with isobutyronitrile acting on the Grignard derivative or isobutyraldehyde acting on the n-butyl lithium derivative. 3,4 - (Dichloromethylenedioxy)bromobenzene (II) is prepared from 3,4-(methylenedioxy)- bromobenzene and PCl 5 . 3,4 - (Difluoromethylenedioxy)bromobenzene (III) is obtained by treating product II above with SbF 3 . 3,4 - (Difluoromethylenedioxy)phenyl isopropyl carbinol (IV) is produced by adding isobutyraldehyde to the n-butyl lithium derivative of compound III. 3,4 - (Difluoromethylenedioxy)phenyl isopropyl ketone is obtained by CrO 3 oxidation of compound IV. Cyclohexyl - 3,4 - (difluoromethylenedioxy) phenyl ketone is produced by reacting cyclohexylcarboxaldehyde with 3,4-(difluoromethylenedioxy)benzene magnesium bromide, Plant growth inhibiting compositions comprise an effective amount of compound I or an acid addition salt thereof with an agriculturallyacceptable carrier and a dispensing agent.
