Abstract

1468348 Torque converter control NEWAGE ENGS Ltd 4 June 1974 [5 March 1973] 10545/73 Heading F2W One of two outputs of a prime mover 10 is connected to a load through a torque converter 11 which can be emptied to increase its slip and allow a greater proportion of the engine power to be available at the other output of the prime mover, the torque converter being filled by a gear pump 23 via a valve 33 which can be operated by a pedal 32 which moves the valve into a position in which the suction side of the pump 23 is connected to the converter outlet, to allow creeping of a vehicle incorporating the arrangement, the other output driving a pump 13A for supplying an hydraulic ram 13 for raising forks in a fork-lift truck. As shown in Fig. 1, in normal travel of the vehicle the pump 23 draws fluid from a sump 21 via line 21A, valve 33 and line 22A and passes it to the torque converter inlet 25 via line 23A, valve 33 and line 24, the outlet 26 from the torque converter returning the fluid to the sump through line 27, valve 33 and line 34. On depression of pedal 32 the valve 33 is altered towards the position shown in Fig. 3 in which the converter inlet 25 is vented at 39 in the valve and pump 14 now draws fluid from the output 26 (and from the sump through a restriction 37) and returns this to the sump. Full depression of pedal 32 applies the vehicle service brakes through an interconnection 40 with the brake linkage 31 and also disengages an hydraulically operated clutch in the gear-box 12, the clutch being applied by pump 14 via valve 33 (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown). Operation of pedal 32 effects vehicle creep whilst the engine fuel supply control 30 may be set for full power.
