Abstract

1468182 Reactor containment NUCLEAR POWER CO (WHETSTONE) Ltd 15 Oct 1974 [23 Oct 1973 2 May 1974] 49216/73 and 19428/74 Heading G6C A nuclear reactor containment vessel has an internal surface faced with a metal liner, thermal insulation consisting of a layer of ceramic bricks or tiles thereover, and one or more interposed layer of compressible porous thermally insulating material disposed between the bricks or tiles and the metal liner; studs are secured on the liner and project through the interposed layer(s), the bricks or tiles are individually secured to the studs and the studs and the securing means are themselves thermally insulated from the interior of the vessel. Fig. 2 illustrates an embodiment of the thermal insulation: liner 18 is cooled by water in pipes 18A and is overlayed with layers 19, 20 of ceramic fibre and/or metal foil and mesh, a deformable layer 29 of graphite felt, and a layer of ceramic bricks or tiles 30. Securing means includes a stud 22 and a headed hollow bolt 41, and is described in detail. The bricks may be of foamed or sintered silicon nitride, or made from a slurry of silica sand and powder. The ceramic layers 19, 20 may be of aluminium silicate fibre or zirconium oxide fibre. Interengagement of bricks is described to minimize passage of coolant gas between adjacent bricks. Other reactor coolants mentioned are liquid sodium and carbon dioxide. A smaller number of thermal insulation layers is utilized in a further embodiment, Figs. 13, 14 (neither shown), and chamfered bricks or tiles are employed; the securing means incorporates a spring.
