Dec. 4, 1919, Rectal appliances.-A short flexible pipe with an enlargement at each end has a valve action provided for at the outer end, so that flatus may be passed, but only when putting an extra pressure on the bowel. The inner enlargement may have a space for holding ointment, and the interior of the plug may contain deodorant or scented material. Fig. 1 shows the plug fitted to receive ointment in the chamber d between the tube c and the enlargement b, which is perforated to allow the ointment to pass into the bowel. The outer enlargement a is perforated at h and closed by a flexible valve i. A twisted wire k wrapped with absorbent thread, which is dipped in deodorant or scented material, is secured to the cover g. Fig. 2 shows a modification, in which the valve takas the form of a ring of rubber m, which covers holes l. In a further modification, the holes are formed in the slope of the enlargement, the shin of the wearer acting as a valve.
