Abstract
1467651 Welding by fusion PARKERHANNIFIN CORP 20 Feb 1974 7684/74 Heading B3R In arc welding together tubes 80, 86 end-toend by apparatus including a rotary electrode 57, wherein the tubes are held fast by engagement therewith of clamp blocks, the tube 80 is formed with a rib 81 and the corresponding clamp blocks 39, 47, 48 have coplanar grooves 51-53, the distance between said rib and the tube/tube interface 84 and between said grooves and the electrode 57 being equal so that when the tube 80 is held fast in the apparatus by the blocks 39, 47, 48 the electrode is located opposite the tube/tube weld location. Preferably, the tube 80 has an end enlargement 82 counterbored to receive and radially locate the tube 86, the ensuing weld penetrating through the enlarged end 82 and the tubes. The electrode 57 is mounted on a C-shaped carrier 58 which is rotatably supported in a C- shaped insulating member 62 in a body 11 and is provided with an electrical contact part-ring 72 and with gear teeth 68 engaged by drive gears 70, 71. Sliding plastics shutters 74, 75 mounted on the member 62 provide for gap closure during welding. The clamp blocks comprise semicircular blocks 39, 40 held in the body 11 and quarter-circular blocks 47, 48, (49), 50 held in clamp members 12, 13, (14), 15 hinged to the body and secured together by toggle fasteners 20.
