Abstract

1467650 Earth boring INST GOR DELA SIBIR OTDEL AKAD NAUK SSSR 24 July 1974 32603/74 Heading E1F A device capable of forming a hole as large as 800 mm diameter in compactable ground includes a drive motor 9 and a forwardly extending crankshaft 1 with skewed crankpins on which are mounted freely-rotatable tapered rollers 2-7 serving in use to displace and compact the ground radially as the device advances, the skew angle typically being 1‹ to render the device self-advancing. The crankpins may be arranged in pairs, each pair being diametrically opposed. Self-advancement is also encouraged by securing the drive motor against rotation by means of radial projections 11 or wheels. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, rollers 2-4 are carried by inner crankshaft 14 and rollers 5-7 by outer crankshaft 13 which is secured to the drive casing 9a and rotates therewith, the crankpins again being skewed but those of the inner crankshaft being skewed in the opposite direction to those of the outer crankshaft, this embodiment likewise being self-advanceable since the two crankshafts rotate in opposite directions in use. The embodiment of Fig. 7 is self-propelled in both directions and includes additional skewed rollers 17 driven via gearing 19 and supported by flanges 20, 21. The tapered rollers may have a resilient coating to prevent spalling of the compacted borehole wall. The device is particularly useful in pipe and cable laying and tunnel driving.
