Abstract

Racks and trays, moving; air, controlling circulation of; heating fittings.-In a drying-machine particularly intended for drying ceramic articles and comprising an enclosure, an endless conveyer for carrying the article through the enclosure in a sinuous path, and means for dividing the enclosure into a drying-compartment and an auxiliary channel for cooling the conveyer before reloading, heating-devices are provided in the drying-compartment, and means for causing a circulation of air in a closed circuit in the drying-compartment. The articles are placed on racks or supports 53 which are suspended from conveyer chains 4 which pass around sprocket-wheels 11. The enclosure 1 is divided into compartments by a U-shaped partition 25. The compartment 29 is further subdivided by an inverted U-shaped partition 27, contains steam coils 35, and forms the drying-chamber, and the compartment 23 forms a chamber for cooling the conveyer while it is returning from the unloading point 56 to the loading point 55. Baffles 36 on the partitions 25, 27 assist in causing the air to play upon the articles. The air heated by the steamcoils 35 is caused to circulate in a closed circuit in the drying-chamber by a fan 33, which forces the air downwards and to which the divided currents of air from the vertical ducts between the partitions 25, 27 are deflected by a conical depression 34 in the roof of the enclosure. The fan and the sprocket-wheels of the conveyer are driven by belt, bevel, and worm gearing from a shaft 48. A modification is described in which a vertical fan is driven within a heated portion of the enclosure roof.
