Articles traversed before drying.-A drying machine, particularly intended for drying ceramic articles, consists of an enclosure divided into a heating compartment and a drying compartment, an endless conveyer travelling over a sinuous course within the enclosure, and means for circulating air between the heating and drying compartments in the general direction of the travel of the conveyer. The enclosure 2 is divided by partitions 30, 31 into a drying-compartment 36 and a heating-compartment 33 containing steam or hot-water coils 50. A chain conveyer 7 passes over sprocket-wheels 9, as shown, so that the articles travel in a sinuous course, but their general direction of travel is longitudinally through the drying-compartment. A fan 45 draws air over the coils 50 and forces it longitudinally through the drying-compartment, and a grated partition 40, by its resistance, tends to secure a uniform distribution of the air in the compartment. The air returns to the coils along an auxiliary compartment 38. The articles are supported by carriers 25 suspended from bars secured to the conveyer chains, and are loaded on to the carriers through an opening 51 and unloaded at 35.
