Abstract
1467078 Measuring ignition timing of IC engine SCANS ASSOCIATES Inc 26 Feb 1974 [1 June 1973] 8564/74 Heading G1U The average firing angle # degrees taken over all the cylinders of an I.C. engine, is evaluated, for an eight cylinder engine, using the Formula:- where the t; are the firing times, see Fig. 2, with respect to the immediately preceding attainment of top dead centre by the piston in an arbitrarily chosen reference cylinder, and X is the time for one complete cycle, = 2 revolutions. Appropriate formulae are given for four and six cylinder engines. According to the specification the average firing angle is a more useful parameter than the firing angles for separate cylinders, and the method employed is a modification of that described in Specification 1379070 which is referred to, in which the various time intervals required are determined by counting clockpulses. In Fig. 2 the arbitrary chosen reference piston is shown as attaining top dead centre at the instants labelled 1, 2, on the second horizontal axis, and the firing pulse for this cylinder is labelled 8 on the above axis. Subsequent firing pulses are labelled 1, 2, 3,.. and, except for manufacturing tolerances, they are spaced apart by 90 degrees intervals. Thus, as shown the firing Angle A 1 degrees of the reference cylinder is in advance, and is given by:- where, as above, t 1 and X are the times shown. The firing angle A 2 degrees of the cylinder that fires first after the attainment of top dead centre in the reference cylinder is given by:- The firing angles of the other cylinders can be obtained similarly, and their average is then as quoted above.
