Abstract
A first unit generates a signal on the start of injection into a reference cylinder of the engine, while a second one produces first and second impulses in accordance with movement of the crankshaft through a predetermined number of degrees, the second impulse being at TDC. This causes a third unit to emit a signal representing the time interval between the impulses. The first and second units cause a fourth one to emit a signal representing the time interval between fuel injection and the second impulse. A computer multiplies the ratio between the signals from the third and fourth units by a signal representing the number of degrees between the impulses. This produces a signal showing the time interval between the start of injection and reaching TDC.
