Abstract

1466291 Retractive switches ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 17 May 1974 [4 June 1973] 22091/74 Heading H1N A control mechanism of the "joystick" type comprises a support body 76 having a cylindrical bore 74 therethrough extending from a front face to a rear face thereof, said bore having a smaller diameter portion 82 opening at said front face and a larger diameter portion 84 opening at said rear face, said portions being joined by an annular shoulder 86, a pivot shaft 12 extending axially through said bore beyond said front and rear faces, and having first and second sections 70 and 72 respectively positioned in bore portions 82 and 84, an outwardly extending flange 88 on said second section 72 adjoining said first section with a clearance from bore portion 84 to permit said shaft to be pivoted about an axis 91 extending laterally approximately through the longitudinal axis of said second section 72 adjacent said flange 88, spring means 100 biasing said flange 88 against said annular shoulder 86 to resiliently retain said shaft 12 axially aligned in said bore 74, an insulative plate 16 surrounding said shaft 12 adjacent the rear face of the body 76 and fixed relative thereto, a pair of contacts 20, 22 mounted on the side of said plate 16 opposite said body 76, a laterally shiftable annular printed-circuit board 50 closely surrounding said second section 72 of shaft 12 and having spaced inner and outer circular conductive layers 54, 56 thereon facing said contacts 20, 22, but out of engagement therewith when said shaft 12 is axially aligned in said bore 74, said pivot shaft 12 being pivotable in opposite directions from said alignment to two respective positions, in one of which contact 20 engages layer 56 while contact 22 engages layer 54 and in the other of which contact 20 engages layer 54 while contact 22 engages layer 56. A handle 108 is mounted on upper section 70 of shaft 12 and a rubber boot seal 106 is sealed to its lower surface 110 and is engaged with upper portion 102 of body 76. The printedcircuit board 50 is preferably free-floating and urged upwardly by conical spring 118. The shaft 12 may also be pivoted in the plane perpendicular to the drawing and two more fixed contacts (24, 26, Fig. 2, not shown) are provided so that two motors (M1 and M2) may be controlled.
