Abstract

1,015,500. Steering gear. AMERICAN CHAIN & CABLE CO. Inc. Nov. 16, 1964 [Nov. 15, 1963], No. 46555/64. Heading B7V. Apparatus for steering a tiller shaft 11 from one of two (or more) steering positions comprises a lever arm 10 extending laterally from the tiller shaft, with two (or more) shift plates 17, 18 independently pivotally mounted on opposite sides of the arm 10 about the same axis and having arcuate cut-out openings 19, 20 respectively. In a two-steering station embodiment, two push-pull control cable assemblies 54, 55 are each attached to one of the plates and each is operable at a steering station. A clutch bar 34 is mounted to oscillate on the lever arm 10 and is positioned within the openings 19, 20 to oscillate in selective operative engagement with either of the plates in the recessed portions 35 or 36. An auxiliary push-pull cable assembly 43, operable at one of the steering stations, moves the clutch bar into locking engagement with one of the plates so that the tiller shaft can be turned from the steering position of that plate independently of the other, steering position. Only when the recessed portions are aligned can the clutch bar be moved out of locking engagement with the plate in which it is engaged. In a further embodiment (not shown), two auxiliary pushpull control cable assemblies can be operatively connected to the clutch bar for the clutch to be selectively engaged in either of the shift plates from both steering positions.
