Abstract
1466269 Liquid level indication MULLARD Ltd 29 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 18439/73 Headings G1H and G1N A liquid level sensor, e.g. for sensing the water, oil or brake fluid level in a vehicle or the water level in a washing machine, comprises an encapsulated semi-conductor thermistor 4 secured to one side of a holder 2 through which extend tubular connectors 9, 10, in which electrical leads 5, 6 to the thermistor are secured, the thermistor being adjacent a wall of its encapsulation so as to allow heat exchange between the thermistor and any liquid surrounding the sensor. The thermistor 4 may be encapsulated in, and soldered to one wall of, a sealed metal can 3 as shown in Fig. 2, the lead 6 being connected to the can wall and the lead 5 via a metal strip 8 to the thermistor 4, both leads 5, 6 extending through a glass seal 7. Instead of a can, the thermistor can be encapsulated in a glass coating. The holder 2, for attachment to the wall of a liquid container, is of plastics, e.g. polypropylene, or other insulating material and comprises a boss 21, shoulder portion 22 and two partially cylindrical lugs (25), 26 to be positioned around the encapsulated thermistor. As in Figs. 4-6 (not shown) holes (27), (28) in the holder 2 accommodate the tubular connectors 9, 10 for external leads 15, 16 connected to leads 5, 6. In an alternative embodiment Figs. 7-10 (not shown) the holder 2 has two main body portions (30), (31) connected by two struts (32), (33) which accommodate the tubular connectors 9, 10. The leads 15, 16 may be connected in series with a battery (18) and signal lamp (17), as in Fig. 3 (not shown), such that the lamp will light or not depending on whether the sensor is immersed in liquid.
