Abstract

1465880 Magnesia grain QUIGLEY CO Inc 18 June 1975 [2 July 1974] 26031/75 Heading C1A Magnesium hydroxide slurry is filtered to yield a cake having 35-40 wt. per cent free water content partially dried to a free water content of 2-10 wt. per cent and compacted into briquettes which are dead burned at 1650-2000‹ C. The solids content of the slurry is preferably 150-450 gt. and may be obtained from calcined dolomite and sea water. The filtration pressure may be from 50-365 p.s.i.g. The drying step may be carried out in a rotary drum maintained at 100-750‹ C., and the compacting can be effected at 4-9 tons cm.<SP>-1</SP> of roll width. The heat required for the drying step may be supplied by exhaust gases from the dead burning step, and is generally effected by cocurrent flow of filter cake and exhaust gases through the drying zone. A granular oxide such as silica may be added in up to 0À02 g. per gram of Mg(OH) 2 prior to slurry filtration.
