Abstract

1465321 Medicines comprising plant extracts H OTTO 16 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 16506/74 Heading A5B A water-soluble material having cytostatic activity is obtained by extracting plants of the Kigelia species, especially the fruit, using water-as a or the solvent. Preferably the comminuted and optionally dried vegetable material of a Kigelia plant is first extracted with a non-polar or slightly polar solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon, halogenated hydrocarbon, ether, ketone alcohol, pyridine or mixtures of these, and the residue is extracted with at least one solvent comprising water. The solvent comprising water may be water itself or water mixed with, for example, liquid ammonia, a lower alkanoic acid, dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl formamide an alcohol or a ketone. Finally, the water-soluble product may be isolated by lyophilization. The approximate analysis of the dried product is carbon (34.7%), hydrogen (5.1%), phosphorus (1.9%), nitrogen (0.4%), chlorine (0.1%), water (3.8%) and ash (20.1%), and it has an I/R spectrum as shown in the drawing. It may be incorporated into pharmaceutical compositions for oral, parenteral, rectal and topical administration containing conventional carriers and excipients.
