Abstract
1465317 Coke oven quench tower SIMONCARVES Ltd 3 April 1974 [6 April 1973] 14699/74 Heading B1R A quenching tower in which coke 23 is quenched contains a vapour scrubber comprising a plurality of spray nozzles fed from a distribution pipe 17 and a plurality of plates 11 disposed across the tower and pivoted at their lower ends about rods 12 and movable by control rods 26, 27 into inclined positions such that adjacent plates are oppositely inclined and alternate plates are parallel, thus forming alternate upright and inverted V- shaped zones, the latter forming a restriction 14 to gas flow, the former a pocket 15 in which solid particles washed from the vapour are precipitated and washed down the tower. In an alternative embodiment, the positions of the plates is controlled by longitudinal rods supported in arcuate slots in the tower wall. The rods may be locked in their positions.
