1464892 Clinometers A B PERNUM 22 Jan 1974 [23 Jan 1973 21 Nov 1973] 03025/74 Heading G1F In a clinometer comprising a casing having at least one straight edge for positioning against a surface whose inclination is to be measured, and a pointer rotatably mounted on a shaft 8 extending between transparent casing walls 2', 3', e.g. of acrylic plastics, the centre of gravity of the pointer lying away from its axis of rotation such that the pointer takes up a predetermined position relative to the vertical, the pointer having a scale and the casing having a reference mark (or vice versa) to indicate inclination, the pointer being mounted on the shaft 8 by a bearing 12, e.g. a needle or ball bearing, having inner and outer races 24, 27 mounted on the shaft 8 and the pointer respectively, at least a central portion of the wall 2' is made resiliently flexible so that a user can press that wall into functional engagement with the outer race 27 to suppress or arrest pendulous movement of the pointer. As shown the pointer is a thin protractor disc 17, e.g. of polystyrene, carrying an eccentrically mounted lead weight 10 and mounted on a shaft 8 passing freely through an aperture in the centre of plate 2' to allow flexure of the plate 2'. A vernier 19 may be mounted on the casing. In an alternative embodiment Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the pointer has an indicator arm co-operating with a scale fixed to the casing.
