Abstract

Aldehyde derivatives of the formula VII - the definition of the symbols is to be taken from Patent Claim 1 - are obtained by reaction of corresponding coumarin compounds which are unsubstituted in the 3-position with a Vilsmeier reagent which is obtained from a substituted formamide of the formula <IMAGE> and an acid halide, e.g. POCl3, SOCl2, COCl2; Vilsmeier reagents of the formula <IMAGE> are preferred. From the products obtained, other aldehyde derivatives can be obtained by reaction with aldehyde reagents such as hydroxylamine, amines or hydrazine derivatives, or the free aldehyde itself, which is likewise accessible for the further reactions mentioned, can be obtained by hydrolysis. The compounds prepared are primarily useful as dyestuffs. <IMAGE>
