Abstract
1464662 Testing vehicle wheels HOFMANN GmbH Gebr [trading as HOFMANN KG MASCHINENFABRIK Gebr] 21 Jan 1975 [12 Feb 1974] 2606/75 Heading B7C [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for testing the fatigue strength of a rotary body such as a spoked wheel 11 comprises means 14 for holding the ring stationary, a rod 15 securable to the hub, a pair of 180 degrees spaced lever arms 43, 44 attached to the rod, eccentric weights 1, 2 rotatably mounted on the lever arms and spaced 180 degrees relative to each other about their axes of rotation, and means for rotating the weights 1, 2 in the same direction while maintaining their 180 degrees spacing so as to apply a sinusoidally varying torsional load to the rod 15 and thus to the wheel hub. As shown the weights 1, 2 are driven by an electric motor 42 via gearing 19-21 and shafts 22, 24. The motor 42 also drives a head 27 having a further eccentric rotatable weight 8 for applying bending loads to the rod 15. The weights 1, 2 and 8 are all radially adjustable, and the provision of a suitable counterweight 29 ensures that the bending load can be reduced to zero. Strain gauges 36, 37 respectively for measuring torsional and bending loads are mounted on the rod 15, and pick ups 39, 40 are provided for respectively measuring the resulting bending and twisting of the rod. For calibration, a removable connection 33 is used to link the head 27 with a calibration unit 32.
