Abstract

1464530 Mineral purification HOGANAS AB 7 Feb 1975 [14 March 1974] 5428/75 Heading C1A A mineral having a laminar structure is purified by (1) forming a slurry in water of the mineral with a particle size no greater than 44 microns, (2) treating the slurry with an ozonized gas to delaminate the particles, and thus to release foreign mineral particles enclosed between the laminµ of the mineral and (3) removing the foreign mineral particles from the slurry. In the example, kaolin is slurried in water in container (I) using stirrer (2). After passing through a sieve (3), the #44 micron slurry was treated with a melting agent (usually sodium hexametaphosphate) through conduit (4), and then passed to a lamella separator (5), which contains a plurality of inclined partition walls. The slurry flows upwards between these partition walls, while the heavier foreign mineral particles move downwards and are removed via outlet (6). The partially purified kaolin slurry was then treated with alkali solution (from conduit 7) and treated in container (8) with ozonized oxygen from conduit (9). After separation of impurities in another lamella separator (10), the purified kaolin slurry was acidified with HCl solution (from conduit 12), and dewatered and dried in apparatus (13). The method may be applied to other clay minerals, tale, mica, asbestos and bauxite.
