Abstract

1464317 Automatic regulation of brakes NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 25 Feb 1975 [10 April 1974] 7836/75 Heading F2F In a method of disabling an automatic braking system employing radar to detect the distance between the vehicle and an object in front thereof, the relative velocity of vehicle and object and the velocity of the vehicle relative to ground being used to apply the brakes when the vehicle is approaching a predetermined distance from the object at a predetermined velocity relative to the ground, the position of the accelerator pedal is sensed to generate a first signal when the pedal is at such a position as to accelerate the vehicle at or near maximum rate, the position of the gear lever is sensed to generate a second signal when the lever is at a position within a low to medium speed range and the brake application system is disabled upon the occurrence of one of said first and second signals. An automatic brake application system 10 includes an oscillator 11 transmitting a continuous high frequency wave through a directional coupler 12 which divides the input into two outputs applied to a circulator 13 and a mixer 15, an antenna 14, amplifier 16 and computation circuitry 17 which uses the information from the echo signal to derive a command signal controlling a brake actuator 22 through an inhibit gate 21, and a manual override circuit 20 comprises a sensor 20 detecting the position of the gear lever and producing a high level signal, when the lever is in a low to medium speed range, and applying it to gate 21 through an OR gate 25. Another sensor 19 detects the position of the accelerator pedal or the degree of throttle opening and produces a high-level signal when the vehicle can be accelerated at or near the maximum rate, this signal also being applied through OR gate 25 to gate 21.
