Abstract

1463737 Production of stabilized vinyl halide polymers HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 6 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 52915/74 Headings C3G and C3P A stabilized vinyl halide homopolymer, vinyl halide copolymer of which up to 50% by weight is derived from a monomer other than vinyl halide monomer, or vinyl halide graft polymer formed by grafting vinyl halide, alone or with a comonomer, on to a backbone polymer, the graft polymer containing at least 50% vinyl halide monomer is produced by: (1) subjecting to bulk polymerization a mixture comprising (a) vinyl halide monomer and, optionally, a comonomer, (b) at least one salt of magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, manganese, zinc, cadmium, tin (stannous or stannic) or lead and of a C 6 to C 18 -carboxylic acid and, optionally, (c) a preformed backbone polymer, the mixture containing 0À1 to 10% by weight of component (b), based on the weight of component (a), and (2) separating the polymer from unreacted monomer. Examples are given in which (i) vinyl chloride is homopolymerized in the presence of calcium stearate or ricinoleate, zinc stearate and epoxidized soybean oil; (ii) vinyl chloride is copolymerized with vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid or maleic anhydride in the presence of calcium stearate, zinc stearate and epoxidized linseed oil; and (iii) vinyl chloride is grafted on to ethylene-propylene rubber, ethylene-propylene-diene rubber or ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer in the presence of calcium stearate, zinc stearate and epoxidized linseed oil.
