Abstract

1463550 Compositions containing a complex of chloramphenicol and a tetracycline G BODRERO 6 Aug 1974 34495/74 Heading A5B A therapeutically administerable composition comprises a complex of chloramphenicol and a tetracycline and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent. The compositions may also contain vitamin B<12> and a local anaesthetic such as procaine hydrochloride. The composition may also contain a complexing agent for bivalent ions, e.g. sodium hexametaphosphate. The composition may be prepared by dissolving chloramphenicol and a tetracycline in an organic solvent; dissolving a complexing agent for bivalent ions in water; mixing the two solutions to form a precipitate of the antibiotic complex; dissolving vitamin B<12> and a local anaesthetic in water and adding the solution to the solution containing the precipitated antibiotic complex; and adjusting the pH to a value of from 4.5 to 5.5. The compositions may be administered orally, by injection or in the form of suppositories.
