Abstract

1463377 Non-agglomerative coal WESTVACO CORP 21 May 1974 22695/74 Heading C5E [Also in Division C1] A particulate, high rank, bituminous coal is converted into a form carbonizable and activatable into activated carbon by heating a bed of the particles fluidized by an oxidizing gas at from 400‹ F. to 700‹ F. for a length of time which renders the coal non-agglomerative, the temperature in the bed being controlled by injection (e.g. spraying) of water. Carbonization may be at 1000‹ F. to 1200‹ F. and activation may be at 1650‹ F. to 1950‹ F. with steam or other suitable oxygen-containing compound.
