Abstract

1463112 Projectile fuses FORENADE FABRIKSVERKEN 24 Jan 1976 [31 Jan 1973] 3387/74 Heading F3A An instantaneous or delayed action projectile fuze, comprises: priming charges 11a and 11d, Fig. 1; a delay charge 11b; and a striker 7a which penetrates only the charge 11a if the delay charge 11b is to be ignited, but which strikes through the charges 11a, 11b and into the charge 11d for instantaneous action. In the embodiment according to Fig. 1, instantaneous action is effected by an electrical signal from a proximity fuse 6 detonating an explosive charge within a housing 7, whereby the striker 7a is driven through charges 11a, 11b and into the charge 11d. Prior to firing the projectile, the electrical igniting means for the explosive charge is short circuited by an inertia bolt 12 touching a contact 8. Upon acceleration of the projectile, the bolt 12 sets back to break the short circuit and to release a blocking safety element 17 which swings outwardly owing to centrifugal force. For delayed action, the electrical firing means for the explosive charge is permanently short circuited by means not shown and the priming charge 1la is detonated when the holder 11 is thrown towards the stationary striker 7a. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, a spring biased striker 19 is locked at safe by a ball 20 until a sleeve 21 sets back upon axial acceleration of the projectile. For delayed detonation, an element 24 engages a shoulder 26 of the striker to limit its displacement. However, for instantaneous action, a knob 22 is rotated so that the element 24 is free to move outwardly from its blocking position owing to centrifugal force. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, a centrifugal locking element 24<SP>1</SP> moves outwardly on firing a missile fitted with the fuze and delayed detonation occurs on impact with a target owing to the throwing forward of the cartridge 27<SP>1</SP> against the locked striker 19<SP>1</SP>. For instantaneous detonation, the knob 22<SP>1</SP> is rotated so as to free the ball 25<SP>1</SP>, thereby to allow a sleeve 21<SP>1</SP> to set back at launch and free a ball 20<SP>1</SP>, whereupon the striker is driven by a spring through the first priming charge and the delay element into igniting contact with the instantaneous priming charge.
