1462990 Continuous casting; straightening CONCAST Inc 28 Oct 1974 [29 Oct 1973] 46612/74 Headings B3F and B3E [Also in Division B8] In a guiding and supporting means, such as a roller apron or withdrawing or straightening apparatus, for a cast strand, a balance beam 23 (as described there is one at each side) is pivotally connected to two consecutive rollers 5, e.g. by way of pivot pins 21 extending from bearings 9 of the rollers, which are guided perpendicularly of the casting path by members 8; the beam 23 is also pivoted on pressure-loading means, such as a piston-and-cylinder unit 16 or screw means, and (since one pin 21 is mounted in a block 18 which is slidable in the beam 23) the distance between the pivotal connections is adjusted automatically with independent movement of the rollers 5 perpendicular to the casting path to maintain the projection of such distance in a plane parallel to the casting path substantially unchanged. Lower rollers 3 or the upper rollers 5 or both may be driven. The lower rollers may be yieldingly mounted and the upper rollers adjustable. Instead of having a sliding block 18, each beam 23 may be telescopic. In another embodiment, the two bearings 9 of each roller 5 are mounted at either end of a respective yoke (10) and the yokes of an adjacent pair of rollers are pivoted on a balance beam (13) at each end; the beams are each pivoted on a holding-down means anchored to foundations or to a frame member 6. If the rollers are short, a single balance beam connected to the yokes midway between their ends is sufficient. Divided rollers having three or more bearings may be mounted in a yoke.
