Abstract

1462657 Sealed cell E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 18 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 11960/74 Heading H1B An hermetically sealed casing for a flat-type cell comprises members 1, 8 of tin-coated steel, copper, aluminium or nickel or conductive plastics sealed at the periphery of their confronting surfaces with plastics gaskets 2, 7. The sealing is performed by the application of heat and pressure and also, if required, with the addition of an adhesive. Preferred materials for the gaskets are polyethylene or an ionic polymer comprising a copolymer of ethylene and methacrylic acid at least partially neutralized with zinc ions. Before the casing is sealed, an anode 6, separator 5, and cathode 3 are placed within the apertures of the gaskets 2, 7. The preferred cathode 3 comprises a lead substrate with the active material copper sulphide 4 on its upper surface. The preferred electrolyte absorbed in the separator 5 comprises 58 parts 1,3-dioxolane, 25 parts 1,2- dimethoxyethane, 16À5 parts LiClO 4 and 0À5 parts 3,4-dimethylisoxayole. The preferred anode 6 is lithium, but Na, Ca, or Al may also be used. In another embodiment (Figs. 4-6, not shown) there is only a single plastics gasket. Other cathode materials mentioned are halides, oxides and sulphides of Pb, Pd, Hg, Cd, Ag, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe+Mn; S, Ag 2 CrO 4 , V oxides, Ag 3 PO 4 and carbon fluoride.
