Abstract

1462295 Drying air; plate-type evaporators and condensers LINDE AG 2 Aug 1974 [7 Aug 1973] 34120/74 Headings F4V F4H and F4S [Also in Divisions B1-B2] An air drying device comprises an evaporator and a condenser in a closed refrigerant circuit and a fan for causing moist air to flow successively in heat exchange contact with the evaporator and condenser, wherein the evaporator is a plate-type heat exchanger. The evaporator comprises identical corrugated sheet metal panels 12 to 15 arranged in pairs with alternate pairs inverted relative to the remaining pairs so that the corrugations of adjacent pairs are offset. The contacting corrugations of each pair define parallel flow passages 18 for the moist air. Beads 19 are pressed in each panel and extend transversely to the corrugations. The beads 19 of facing panels 13, 14 of adjacent pairs of panels contact one another to separate the offset corrugations of panels 13, 14 to define sinusoidal flow passages 25 for the refrigerant. The beads 19 of the panels 12, 13 or 14, 15 contact one another to define passages linking the flow passages 18, whereby water separated from the air flow may drain from the evaporator, which may be located with the passages 18 inclined to the horizontal. Aluminium foil, 20 e.g. 0À2 mm. thick, is trapped between the corrugations of panels 12, 13 or 14, 15 to form extended heat transfer surfaces. Projections 21 from the foil define V-shaped baffles located in the passages formed by the beads 19 to catch water droplets in the passages 18 and to cause air turbulence. The corrugations are less deep between than at the beads 19, as at 24, so that each flow passage 18 narrows between adjacent baffles 21. The panels are seam welded at edges 27. The condenser may have the same construction as the evaporator.
