Abstract

1462216 Automatic control of vehicle speed and I C engine fuel supply NIPPONDENSO CO Ltd and TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 27 Nov 1974 [7 May 1974] 51417/74 Headings G3N and G3R [Also in Division F1] A control system for an I.C. engine driven vehicle includes a first constant speed control for responding to the difference between a demand signal and an actual speed signal to vary the opening of the throttle valve in a direction to reduce the speed error, second control means responding to an engine operating condition, e.g. manifold pressure, to supply a quantity of fuel to the engine and a correction system responsive to the speed error signal and to the rate of variation of fuel quantity to modify the amount of fuel supplied when the constant speed control is operative. Fig. 2 shows a constant speed control system A which includes a discriminator 5 for comparing the outputs of a speed setting arrangement 3 and an actual speed detector 4 to produce an error signal which is used to operate throttle valve 2 through a mechanism 7. The actual speed is derived from pulses from the engine contact braker which are integrated to provide a voltage representing actual engine speed. The mixture control B includes a manifold pressure sensor whose output signal is used to adjust the effective stroke of fuel injection pump 60, see Fig. 4, by altering the position of stop 73 on plate 65 and thus the quantity of fuel injected. When the automatic constant speed control is operative the engine fuel and ignition settings are changed to run under optimum conditions by advancing the ignition timing by a fixed amount and modifying the control signal to the fuel injection system to weaken the mixture. The ignition advance is obtained by using a second set of contacts in the contact breaker which are angularly spaced from the first set and the mixture is changed by multiplying the fuel signal by a factor derived from the speed error signal Vo and the differential of the injector control arm position signal Vp. A counter is used in the correction circuitry so that the fuel supplied is altered in step fashion to the reduced setting. A mechanical speed control arrangement also is described, Fig. 9 (not shown), where a weight type governor is locked electromagnetically to an hydraulic flapper valve at the desired speed setting and thereafter the valve alters the pressure in a cylinder connected in the throttle linkage to change the throttle valve position.
