Abstract

1462099 Transporting hydrocarbon oils MARATHON OIL CO 23 April 1974 [26 April 1973] 17760/74 Heading C5E Viscous hydrocarbon mixture is converted into a readily pumpable slurry by fractionating into a relatively low pour point fraction and a relatively high pour point fraction, congealing at least a portion of the relatively high pour point fraction and slurrying the congealed material in the relatively low pour point fraction. Suitable feed materials are waxy crudes containing 1-80 wt.% wax and having pour points of - 10‹ to 200‹ F. and can be shale oil, tar sand oil, fuel oil or gas oil. The feed is preferably fractionated by distillation to separate 1-80 wt.% as the relatively high pour point fraction. The congealing can be performed by spraying the fraction into air and the prills formed generally 0À05-20 mm. diameter, can be coated with CaCO 3 , synthetic resin, bentonite, kaolin or fuller's earth. Up to 50% of the relatively high pour point fraction can be cracked before congealing. 0À0001-20 volume % of sorbitan monolaurate or sodium petroleum sulphonate can be added to the high pour point fraction before congealing. Carbon dioxide, a drag reducing agent or diluent gasoline can be added to the slurry.
