Abstract
1461955 Cooling cable joints BICC Ltd 23 May 1975 [28 May 1974] 23630/74 Heading H2E [Also in Division F4] A cable installation which is cooled by cooling fluid flowing in pipes alongside the cables comprises a thermally conductive enclosure 1 surrounding a cable joint, and a pipe 4, interconnected in and forming part of a circulating cooling system, secured in thermal contact with and to the enclosure, such that a flexible plug can be forced by fluid pressure through and in fluid tight engagement with the pipes to purge the system of cooling fluid during emptying, or of air during filling, the system. The pipe 4 may be secured by welding, a copper saddle (16), metal straps (26), or copper webs (36). Several enclosures may be connected in series by flow pipes 3, 5 of the system (Fig. 6); an enclosure may be secured to two pipes in separate flow pipes (Fig. 4). The pipe 4 may be up to 30% less in cross-sectional area than the pipes 3, 5. The enclosures may be earthed to reduce corrosion, or the pipe 4 may be insulated or the cooling fluid made non-conductive.
