Abstract

1461794 Fibrids BASF AG 22 May 1974 [23 May 1973] 22837/74 Heading B5B Thermoplastic fibrids are formed by passing a homogenous solution of the plastic material in an organic solvent through nozzles into a zone having the form of an impulse chamber where the solution is cooled and the thermoplastic material precipitates and in which a turbulent field of shear forces exists, this being produced by the introduction of one or more jets of gaseous or liquid medium into the impulse chamber of a velocity of at least 5 m/s. In Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is the propulsive jet, 2 the outlet for the solution of the plastic material, 3 is the impulse exchange chamber, 4 is the tank, 5 is the inlet for the gaseous or liquid medium and 6 is the inlet for the homogeneous solution. Preferred plastics are polythene or an ethylene copolymer. The homogeneous solution may also contain an expanding agent.
