1461639 Selective embossing DYMO INDUSTRIES Inc 2 April 1974 [4 April 1973] 14603/74 Headings B6F, B6J A machine for impressing debossed characters into a plastics blank 12, Fig. 20, comprises a carrier 40 for receiving the blank, and means for feeding the carrier along a guide 30 through an impressing station 54. Die carriers.-A die carrier 100, Fig. 17, comprises a plurality of resilient slotted fingers (98, Fig. 16, not shown) which receive detachable dies 96, Fig. 11, and can be rotated by a knob (110) until an index (112, Fig. 1, not shown) is opposite a selected character on a top plate (24). A detent roller 154, Fig. 17, engages aligning recesses (152, Fig. 16) in a detent rim (150). Embossing.-Each die, 96 Fig. 11, comprises a character punch 56 which in operation is impressed into a plastics blank 12 carrying on its surface a foil of contrasting colour. A portion 64 is impressed into a character-shaped recess formed by the punch. The scrim 66 remaining after the punching operation is then removed. Impression mechanism.-A handle 26, Fig. 17, is fixed to a shaft 214 which carries a cam 220. When the handle is turned, the cam 220 depresses an arm 206 carrying a ram 62 which presses the selected character punch into the plastics blank. A finger 236 holds the sheet down while the punch is withdrawn. Spacing mechanism; special holders.-The plastics blank 12, Fig. 20, is located on the carrier 40 by recesses in its underside being engaged by corresponding projections in the carrier base. The carrier has three parallel grooves (174, Figs. 18, 19, not shown) in its underside any one of which can be engaged with a rib 172, Fig. 17, in a guidepath 30. Indices 180 are provided to indicate which groove is engaged with the rib 172. The carrier 40 is advanced by a pawl 264, which is reciprocated by arms 256 fixed to a shaft 250 which is rotated by a cam 248, Fig. 17 on the shaft 214. The distance through which the arms 256 pivot is limited by a projection (280, Fig. 16) on the member 258 carrying pawl 264, which projection strikes a stop surface (282) on the die carrier 100. The surface (282) may be varied in diameter to provide variable spacing. Scales 196, 198, Fig. 20, on the carrier 40 provide for centring the text on the sheet 12, an index 200 fixed to the guide path 30 being placed adjacent the number of letters in the text on the appropriate scale dependent on whether large or small letters are being impressed.
