Abstract

1461510 Pencils SAKURA COLOR PRODUCTS CORP 26 Feb 1974 8720/74 Heading B6P A pencil of the type having an expandable chuck 14 to grip the lead 21 further includes a protecting tube 20, 22 located within a sleeve 18. If the chuck moves downwards by only a predetermined amount the lead is fed conventionally. If the chuck is moved further than this amount then it engages groove 25 in the sleeve by means of projections 24 on each jaw of the chuck. When the chuck is withdrawn upwards from the position shown in Fig. 3 the tube 20, 22 and lead 21 are retracted. A user of the pencil can distinguish between lead projection/retraction because the pencil has two springs of different strengths urging the chuck 14 upwards, it being necessary to exert greater pressure to retract the lead than to project it.
