Abstract
1461297 Active carbon KURARAY CO Ltd 17 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 26787/74 Heading C1A Active carbon is prepared in a two stage process comprising (a) contacting a carbonaceous or inorganic substrate powder with a vaporized hydrocarbon at #700‹ C., in an atmosphere containing substantially no oxygen, whereby at least 10 parts by weight of the carbon formed by thermal decomposition of the hydrocarbon are fixed on 100 parts by weight of the substrate, and (b) contacting with an oxidizing gas at 800-1000‹ C. Two embodiments are described; in the first the hydrocarbon sources are liquids, such as fuel oil, light oil and kerosene, acting as binders with which the substrate is granulated. In the second embodiment, either liquid hydrocarbons vaporized by preheating at 300-500‹ C. or gaseous hydrocarbons are introduced into the reactor containing the substrate which has been previously granulated using a hydrocarbonfree binder. The oxidizing gas may comprise steam, carbon dioxide, or the gases from the combustion of propane.
