1460742 Transfer printing L B HOLLIDAY & CO Ltd 12 Nov 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 52493/ 73 Heading D1B Cellulosic materials are transfer printed by applying a transfer sheet, bearing a sublimable dyestuff containing one or more amino, hydroxy, or N-hydroxyalkylamino group, to a fabric composed of a natural and/or regenerated cellulosic material or a blend with synthetic or non-cellulosic material, which has thereon at least one curable resin containing one or more hydroxymethyl, alkoxymethyl or aldehyde groups capable of reacting with the above dyestuff groups; the transfer is effected by heating to effect both transfer of the dyestuff and curing or end-curing of the resin with simultaneous fixing of the dyestuff onto the cellulosic material. Preferred cellulosic materials are cotton and/or rayon and blends with polyamide or polyester. Preferred resin compounds for pretreating the cellulosic material are urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde or methylated melamine formaldehyde precondensates and many other compounds containing N-hydroxymethyl groups. The curing of the resin and the fixing of the dye is preferably effected in one stage at 180- 240‹C for 5 secs-1¢ mins; alternatively the resin may be partly cured at 140‹C, then curing is completed at the transfer stage at 180- 240‹C. A catalyst is preferably used for the curing, particularly zinc nitrate, magnesium chloride, ammonium chloride, ammonium thiocyanate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, ammonium sulphate, ammonium oxalate or diammonium phosphate. The dyestuffs are preferably anthraquinone or azo disperse dyes.
